Research Topic

Regulation of the myelin basic protein function by calmoduline and post-tranlational modifications

The myelin basic protein (MBP) is essential for the formation of the myelin sheath in the central nervous system. MBP’s interaction with different cellular components is regulated by calmodulin (CaM). In addition, this interaction is influenced by various post-translational modifications (MPT) undergone by MBP. One of the MPT is the deimination or citrullination which correlates with the early development, demyelination and severity of disease in the case of multiple sclerosis (MS).

In order to contribute to the knowledge of the MBP regulation by CaM we study the interaction between the different isoforms of classical MBP family and CaM and also how the deimination/citrullination of MBP modified or not this interaction.

Our findings allow us to affirm that the biological activity of each isoform of MBP is differentially regulated by CaM and/or MPT. Therefore, the study of this regulation may be important in understanding the role of these isoforms in the differentiation of oligodendrocytes, the myelination in normal and pathological conditions as in MS, etc., and as the deimination influences those events.

I worked in the laboratory of the Oncohematology Department, National Hospital of Clinical, Faculty of Medicine, UNC (1991-1996). Since 1992 I teach at the FCQ-UNC. I did my PhD at the Clinical Biochemistry Department, FCQ-UNC (1997-2003). I did my postdoc at the Biological Chemistry Department, FCQ-UNC (2004-2005). I started the Career of Scientific Research of the National Council of Scientific and Technical Research (CICYT-CONICET) in 2005, being actually Associate Research.
