Comparison of the properties of lipid films in different supramolecular arrangements
My PhD project is focused on studying the properties of lipid membranes organized in monolayers and bilayers employing different experimental models such as Langmuir monolayers, vesicles, unsupported (free-standing) bilayers, and supported monolayers and bilayers. Our aim is to study physicochemical aspects of these models related with phase coexistence, film electrostatics, and the other parameters that influence the system dynamics. For this purpose, we use imaging techniques for the observation and superficial characterization of the systems, including Brewster Angle Microscopy, Fluorescence Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy.
